Could you be our quarterly magazine editor?

Design / Creative volunteer needed for Berkshire Family History Society

To edit and progress the publication of a quarterly 44 page A4 size magazine. Tasks may include:

  • Gathering in or originating text and images for each quarterly issue, consisting of:
    • main section of 36 pages — roughly one third containing regular items, most compiled by society officers, and two thirds with feature articles from contributors (and sometimes the editor).
    • cover of four pages; the inside back cover and back cover carrying details of the next three months’ branch meetings.
    • Publications List: four pages of material supplied by the Shop manager, Ivan Dickason.
  • Editing input to the appropriate length, literacy standard and house style.
  • Providing printers with finished copy, and liaising with mailing company on distribution.
  • Originating membership renewal documentation for inclusion with June & September issues of the magazine.

Ideally the editor needs familiarity with:

  • Some form of DTP software for page layouts — e.g. PageMaker or MS Publisher.
  • Adobe Photoshop or similar for processing pictures.
  • PDF creation.
  • Excel, for recording statistical info and creating the editorial and production schedules.

Deadlines for submissions to editor are first week (approx) January, April, July and October with finished magazine distribution 6 to 7 weeks later. Therefore busiest times are the month follow the submissions deadlines.
