Introduction – overview of the funding
The McCarthy Stone Foundation was launched in 2020 and runs a number of grant programmes throughout the year for organisations supporting projects to improve the health and wellbeing of people over 65 in specific regions of the UK. The Foundation gives grants of unrestricted core funding to grassroots groups of up to £7,500.
Who is eligible to apply?
Community organisations, registered charities and other groups (including CICs limited by guarantee) may apply. Organisations must have:
- an annual income less than £250,000;

- a registered bank account in the name of the organisation.
Organisations must be working with adults over 65 years of age and providing direct person-centred interventions (e.g. befriending) or group-based social activity to address loneliness and isolation in deprived areas.
What are the funder priorities?
Funding has been prioritised to organisations able to demonstrate that they are working in specified locations across certain regions, with a key focus on areas where income deprivation and loneliness affecting older people is most acute.
When considering which areas to fund, the Foundation uses the Indices of Deprivation 2015 and 2019 (communities.gov.uk). Please check this before applying (many wards in Reading are included).
How much can organisations apply for?
