Introduction – overview of the funding
British Gas Energy Trust is an independent Charitable Trust solely funded by British Gas since 2004. Their mission is to alleviate the detrimental impact of poverty, with a focus on fuel poverty.
Since its launch, the British Gas Energy Trust has provided consistent, financial help for vulnerable households and remains one of the largest, grant giving energy Trusts in the UK.
Who is eligible to apply?
British Gas Energy Trust grants are available to British Gas and non-British Gas customers.
Pre-payment meter customers must have between £50 and £1,700 of energy debt
Credit customers must have between £250 and £1,700 of energy debt
In order to apply for a grant, applicants must:
- Be living in England, Scotland, or Wales
- Not have received a grant from the British Gas Energy Trust within the last 2 years
- Have a household income of less than £18,723 or someone in the household is registered disabled and receives a disability benefit or receives Carers Allowance or has 3+ children
- Be seeking a grant to clear an outstanding debt on a current or open gas, electricity or dual fuel energy account. The account must be in their name and relate to their main residence
- Be in or facing fuel poverty
- Have received money advice /guidance within the last 6 months
What are the funder priorities?
The funding is aimed at people who cannot access energy debt help from their own provider.
The Trust is interested in funding applications where the applicant can show a sustainable position moving forward.
How much can individuals apply for?
The Trust does not award cash payments, and will instead credit the householder account.
Individual and Families Fund will cover arrears of between £50 and £1,700.
What the funding can be used for
Grants will be paid into eligible Energy accounts to clear debts
Is there a deadline?
The Individual and Families fund is now open for applications from both British Gas customers and non-British Gas customers with pre-payment and credit meter debt.
The British Gas Energy Trust reserves the right to close the application portal with little or no notice once funds have been expended
