Connections for Life is the new way that the RAF Association is delivering our welfare services by matching volunteers with beneficiaries. Whether lonely, isolated from friends and
family or facing difficult situations alone, Connections For Life works tirelessly to connect
those in need to the people and services that can help them the most.
Depending on the beneficiary’s requirements, you will remain their volunteer for the duration of the project with the aim of integrating them back into the community and helping them become confident and independent again. As a Connections Volunteer, you will have the whole support of the Association behind you and a designated co-ordinator as your point of contact. We will provide you with all the necessary training so you can rest assured that you will have all the skills you need.
Not having someone to talk to during these challenging times can be lonely, particularly if the person is used to social activities and spending time with others. A friendly, 30-minute chat that you will offer will make all the difference.
You will be invited to speak to a member of the team before your application for the Befriender role is successful. This will enable both the volunteer and the organisation to find out more about each other and to assess whether the role will be suitable for the volunteer. Volunteers will be asked to provide two references. If the volunteer meets the criteria required they will then be referred for training.
Initial training will consist of:
- Half-day online befriender volunteer training course.
What you will be doing
- Providing regular social interaction and support to RAF veterans via telephone
- Relaying any concerns to your Connections Coordinator
- Regularly submitting an activity log summarising your interactions so we can make sure everyone is receiving the help they need
Why is it rewarding?
It is an important opportunity to help members of the RAF community to feel less isolated and lonely during the Coronavirus crisis.
Who do Connections Volunteers report to?
Connections Volunteers will report to their Connections Coordinators following being approved in the role. Prior to approval, all volunteers will be in contact with the Connections Administrators.
