Compass Recovery College are continuing their free voluntary sector mental health and wellbeing training this March

These workshops are open access to staff, volunteers and befrienders alike. The goal of this free training is to boost voluntary sector mental health and wellbeing knowledge and help those supporting others to take control of their own mental wellbeing.

We would like to continue developing this training based on the needs and interests of the voluntary and community sector. If you have any experiences or interests we can help with please contact Ashley at Ashley.Hitchman@reading.gov.uk to discuss future opportunities. The dates and topics of our online workshops in March are below.

Understanding Common Mental Health Problems: Wednesday 16 March: 10am-12pm, Microsoft Teams

Compass’s Common Mental Health Problems workshops will examine and explore how we approach basic common mental health problems and we how we look to treat these disorders within the community. Recovery Workers, Ashley Hitchman and Mark Dibben, both with lived experience of mental health problems, will discuss and explore many of the common issues that we all face – anxiety, depression, stress, and more. As a group we’ll work on removing the stigmatisation around how we deal with mental health, how we’re able to increase our confidence in supporting people who are experiencing distress and increase awareness of how to support your own wellbeing and the wellbeing of others.

Understanding Psychosis and Hearing Voices: Wednesday 30 March: 10am-11:30am, Microsoft Teams

The experience of psychosis, for example hearing voices or experiencing altered perception, it is surprisingly common. Being diagnosed with psychosis can be frightening and life changing event. There are lots of misconceptions and stigma regarding psychosis which can make coming to terms with it even harder. The workshop will work with the voice hearers’ experience and focus on understanding the experience. Can include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and Schizoaffective disorder. Will discuss warning signs and recognising relapse.
