First Steps towards Safe and Sound – Data Protection and keeping personal data safe

Wednesday 17 June 2026

Do you need some help with your basic policies?

First Steps towards Safe and Sound is a free tool available to all voluntary and community groups offering services in Reading and will help you to get started with good governance.

In 2026 we will be running three sessions to help you get to grips with:

  • Your Safeguarding Policy and DBS checks – Feb session
  • Data Protection and keeping personal data safe – June session
  • Your Volunteer Policy and Equal Opportunities Policy – Oct session

These three areas are also often what funders will ask you to provide when they are considering your funding applications.

Each session is a 1 hour online session. You can attend any of all of the above. Each session will include:
  1. An overview of First Steps towards Safe and Sound and the benefits for your group
  2. Focus on themed area – see above
  3. Opportunity for questions
  4. Free resources and templates
Who should attend?

A trustee, manager or lead volunteer for your group who has some understanding of how the group runs.

Whilst these sessions are designed more for smaller groups, groups of any size are welcome to attend. If you are unsure, feel free to get in touch at training@rva.org.uk

Please note that this session will take place online via Zoom. If you have access needs or prefer to attend in-person, just get in touch and we can arrange another date and time in person to suit you.

See our training page here for the alternative dates.

We look forward to seeing you then.
