Step right up and join the fun! Reading Mencap is thrilled to announce the second annual Walk a Mile in Our Shoes event on Wednesday 18 June.

Building on the resounding success of its inaugural year, which saw more than 120 enthusiastic walkers and 60 volunteers take part, Reading Mencap is once again inviting the whole community to join this sponsored walk in Forbury Gardens from 12 noon.

Children and adults with learning disabilities, their families, carers, teachers and supporters will be among those lacing up their walking shoes during Learning Disability Week.

The aim? To spread smiles, raise crucial awareness and celebrate the incredible abilities of people learning disability while walking a mile around the beautiful gardens.

The event will also be showcasing organisations who employ or give people with learning disabilities volunteering or work experience with the aim of demonstrating their positive contribution in the workplace and how employers can hire people successfully.

Kate Stonehouse, Reading Mencap’s corporate engagement officer, said. “After such a wonderful response last year, we are so excited to bring Walk a Mile in Our Shoes back to Reading.

“Unemployment and a lack of meaningful activity are huge problems for people with learning disabilities, particularly young people who often leave school without any plan of what to do next.

“We hope that bringing young people with learning disabilities together with potential employers will help them fulfil their potential and contribute to society.

“We aim to make this a truly memorable and inclusive event for everyone involved.”

£5 entry fee per person (carers and Reading Mencap members free). People can sign up for the walk at https://forms.office.com/e/UrV8H9Uy6T
