My Mother Tongue: A celebration of community languages

Join community researchers and the University of Reading for a free, family-friendly event to celebrate International Mother Language Day.

The event on Wednesday 21 February 2024, from 11am to 1pm, will take place at the Lifespring Church on Oxford Road and will showcase and celebrate all the languages spoken in Reading. You can register here or just turn up on the day.

There will be music, stories and more from all over the world:
• Refreshments from different cultures, including Arabic coffee
• Art displays
• Poetry from Afghanistan
• Folk songs from Egypt
• Dance and song from Sudan
• Story reading for children
• Calligraphy writing

Dr Holly Joseph, Director of the Centre for Literacy and Multilingualism at the University of Reading, said: “In Reading, we have an incredible richness of languages and cultures. This event is an opportunity to honour that diversity, bring people together, and celebrate its importance.”
