Sociable, confident people to support museum staff at our ‘Abbey on Wheels’ outreach events

Marketing / PR volunteers needed for Reading Museum & Town Hall

Reading Abbey Revealed is a project jointly funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Reading Borough Council. It will conserve and protect the Abbey, introduce interpretation within the Abbey Quarter and across Reading and deliver an exciting events and volunteer programme.

We are looking for sociable, confident people to support museum staff at our ‘Abbey on Wheels’ outreach events across Reading. We will want volunteers to talk to the public about the Reading Abbey Revealed project and help with Abbey-related activities, often collaborating with the charity RG Spaces.

Some of the tasks you could be involved in include:
• Family activities
• Being an ambassador for the project – providing updates on the project and sharing information about the Abbey Quarter’s history
• Help with object handling

We want the volunteer to get as much as possible from the role. They will have the opportunity to be part of an exciting major project for Reading and develop numerous skills such as handling objects that link to the Abbey Quarter’s history, working with children and public speaking. It’s also a great way to meet new people and learn more about Reading’s rich history. As part of the registration process, we will also discuss what you hope to get out of volunteering with us and how we can help you achieve this.

Person specification;
• Flexible and willing to help with a wide range of activities
• Able to work at various venues across Reading
• Be fit and willing to help with setting up event stands
• Able to work as part of a team
• Enthusiastic, confident and proactive
• An interest in Reading’s heritage

Time commitment;
Due to the nature of this role there is no time commitment. The events are held during the day at weekends or on weekdays. When completing the registration form we will take your general availability and you will join our pool of events volunteers. This group will be notified about forthcoming events and be able to sign up on a first-come, first-serve basis.

To apply;
Read through our volunteer policy (found under ‘Get Involved’ at www.readingmuseum.org.uk) and complete the volunteer registration form. Email your form to curator@readingmuseum.org.uk. If we think you are suitable for this role, we will invite you to Reading Museum for a brief chat.
