Could you be a positive role model to a young person?

Learning support / Mentoring volunteers needed for Starting Point Mentoring

The purpose of a mentor is to be a positive role model, supporting and encouraging a young person to make the sometimes difficult transition into employment, education and training.

The role of a mentor may include:
• Helping to explore options and identify barriers through conversation.
• Listening to and encouraging the young person.
• Helping to put together/develop a CV and cover letters.
• Helping to fill in job applications.
• Preparing the young person for and/or accompanying them to interviews.
• Signposting and/or accompanying the young person to other services that provide specialist support.
• Helping to overcome anxieties such as fear of public transport or speaking on the phone.
• Helping the young person develop skills for the workplace such as time-keeping, conflict resolution and communication skills.

We are looking for volunteer mentors of different ages, genders, professions and cultural backgrounds, who will commit themselves to meeting a young person on a regular basis. We strive to recruit a diverse group of mentors with different skills and experiences, as this better supports a diverse group of young people facing unique and varying barriers to employment education and training.
