The Group provides an opportunity for people with dementia and their carers to engage with and socialise with other group members in a welcoming and non-judgemental environment.
You will be supporting the Group leader in a variety of ways, e.g., by welcoming participants, making and serving light refreshments and washing up, encouraging participation, chatting with participants and tidying up the room at the end of the session.
You will work with a number of other volunteers who will be happy to show you the ropes and help you settle in.
This role would suit someone who enjoys meeting and talking with people, has good communication skills and is patient, caring and reliable. Some knowledge of dementia and how it affects people would be an advantage but is not essential as training will be provided. Volunteers must also be willing to complete any necessary training and be happy to work as part of a team of volunteers and staff.
Ideally we are looking for volunteers who are able to commit a few hours every other week, but we’d also love to hear from volunteers who can commit to a regular attendance on a monthly basis. The Activity Group meets on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday between 10.30am and 12.30pm although volunteers start at around 10.00am and finish by about 12.45pm.
We cover all agreed out of pocket expenses, provide training in dementia and how it affects people and offer on-going support.
Volunteers need to complete a simple registration form, visit the Greyfriars Group for an informal chat and provide details of two referees.
