Trustee / Committee volunteers needed for Private: Reading Children’s & Voluntary Youth Services (RCVYS)

SPECIFIC DUTIES OF THE CHAIR
STRATEGIC;
• Provide leadership to the Executive by facilitating joint ownership of its vision and strategy among the membership.
• Together with the Development Worker, represent the interests of RCVYS members in public, to the media and to strategic partners within government and its agencies.
• To ensure maximum influence for RCVYS in a range of arenas (public, private and voluntary).

GOVERNANCE;
• Chair all meetings of the RCVYS Executive.
• Take a leadership role in ensuring that the RCVYS Executive fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of the organisation.
• Ensure that RCVYS complies with its constitution, any relevant legislation or regulations.
• Safeguard the good name and values of RCVYS.
• Ensure that RCVYS pursues its objectives as defined by the constitution and applies its resources exclusively in pursuance of its objectives.
• Contribute actively through the RCVYS Executive in giving firm strategic direction to the organisation, determining overall policy, defining goals, setting targets and evaluating performance against set targets.
• Together with the Vice Chair and Treasurer to support the Development Worker in achieving the aims of the organisation and progressing the RCVYS Executive’s decisions.
• Organise the supervision of the work of the Development Worker and provide a regular performance review and appraisal, assisted by other members of the RCVYS Executive as appropriate.
• Authorise action taken between meetings of the RCVYS Executive.
• Be one of the authorised signatories of cheques and legal documents.

PERSON SPECIFICATION;

ESSENTIAL;
• A commitment to the aims and values of RCVYS.
• Understanding and sympathy towards the needs of children, young people and families.
• A commitment to equality opportunities.
• A person of good standing and integrity, able to make impartial judgements.
• Experience as a Chairperson.
• Ability to speak in public, negotiate and represent the views of RCVYS and its members at all levels.
• Prepared to represent RCVYS at key networks, conferences and events.
• Ability to hold relevant parties (council/funders/board members) to account.
• Sufficient time to fulfil the requirements of the position.
• Accessible to Reading as required.
• Available to chair all meetings of the RCVYS Executive.

DESIRABLE;
• The Chair should have local working knowledge of services for children, young people and families, and the role of the voluntary sector.
• The Chair should have local working knowledge of the role of the voluntary sector.
• An understanding of the localism agenda and how it applies to Reading.
• An understanding of Reading and its strengths and challenges.
