Didcot Railway Centre is a museum and preservation society promoting Railways and the Great Western Railway in particular.

The Education Team includes around a dozen volunteers at any one time and has the task of educating the visitors (whether adults or children) about the railway and certain related events in history.

Our school activities are aimed at all ages from nursery through to senior school pupils and to young volunteers and apprentices. Classes come to the centre during term time and learn about topics like ‘The Coming of the Railways’, ‘The Victorians’ etc. which we help to educate the children regarding how the railways were built and developed etc. Some towns would not exist if it were not for the railway and visitors learn about how it affected the balance between urbanisation and the countryside.

Our ‘World War II Evacuation days’ offer the chance to visit us for the day and we help to educate the children using our own classroom disguised as a railway carriage and our own genuine WWII Air Raid shelter. As part of the day the children will be ‘evacuated’ to the country on board a steam train where our volunteers will meet the train and talk to the children about what would have happened during 1940.

A Steam Train is usually available for our activities and events.

We believe there is no age limit to education and everyone will find some history interesting or fascinating.
