Support those living with dementia in our MCST sessions!

Support volunteers needed for Age UK Berkshire in RG7

Volunteer opportunity to support Maintenance Cognitive Stimulation Therapy (MCST) programme for people living with dementia.

Age UK Berkshire deliver a MCST programme where group members take part in meaningful and stimulating activities, proven to help maintain memory and mental function. The groups provide a fun, supportive environment where people can build new relationships. A carer’s friendship group also take place at the same time for any carers who wish to join.

MCST Activities include: discussions, word games, quizzes, and physical activities, creative and musical activities.

We are looking for volunteers to help support the programme.
What does the role involve?

  • Help project leads set up the venue and session activities on site before the sessions begin.
  • Welcome clients to the programme; providing a friendly smile as people arrive and chatting with clients and their carers.
  • Observing sessions, feeding back to both project leads and securing recording the data.
  • Liaising with carers to note any changes in participants after the sessions.
  • Helping to gather quantitative feedback as part of the programme evaluation.
  • Help to compile the final case study reports based on observations and feedback.

We are looking for people who are well organised with good communication skills, patience and are able to put people at ease. It is important to be willing to work as part of a team, enjoy variety and have a flexible approach.
You will not be expected to deliver the sessions but in cases of holiday, sickness or emergency you may be asked to step in.

This volunteer role would suit someone who can commit to attending the Tuesday fortnightly sessions at Grazeley Village Hall. Hours are 9.30am – 12.30pm so we are looking for volunteers who can make a regular, on-going commitment to attend the sessions throughout the year.

What benefits can you expect?

  • The satisfaction of making a vital difference to the happiness and lives of those living with dementia and their carers.
  • Opportunity to participate in a pilot programme running nationally across Age UK which is helping to develop additional dementia resources.
  • For anyone looking to get into the charity sector or hospitality, this is a great way to get an insight as to what’s involved and gain rewarding new experiences.

Although not essential, it would be an advantage if you have experience of dealing with, or caring for, those living with dementia informally (e.g. contact with or care of older family members), or formally in employment.

Formal Requirements
We require a completed Application Form submitted either online or you can download the Volunteer Offer of Service form and post it to us.
We also require the names of two referees who have known you for a minimum of one year. For this role, there is a need for a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

We would encourage all applicants to attend a Dementia Friends session and become a Dementia Friend to learn more about people with dementia.
