Could you be a DraughtBuster? Help reduce energy use, make homes warmer and alleviate energy poverty in Reading

DIY / Maintenance volunteer needed for Transition Town Reading

The Reading DraughtBusters aim to reduce energy use, to make homes warmer and to
alleviate energy poverty. We do this by visiting the homes of those in Energy Poverty.

Our lead DraughtBuster has been doing this for ten years now and wishes to step back.

On visiting a household we survey the property for draughts and inadequacies. Then report to
the householder giving our recommendations and if acceptable carry out the draughtproofing works there and then, a one-stop shop arrangement. Before leaving we offer energy use reduction advice including heating system control and management.

Your help will be greatly appreciated by the clients and this organisation. There is a lot of
useful information on our website https://readinguk.org/draughtbusters/

As a volunteer, you will be helping folk in our community to be warmer, and in extreme
cases making it less likely that they would become ill or even die! Certainly, they will be
warmer after the intervention.

We have been operating on Friday afternoons and occasionally Saturday mornings. The
commitment should be for half a day a week during the heating season only. It should be
possible to expand the operations.

We will provide full training and support in the form of a handover followed by mentoring,
there is a budget in place to fund materials and travel costs. You may be asked to attend a
course on safeguarding.

We have recently helped set up a DraughtBusters group in the Royal Borough of Windsor
and Maidenhead and they are now operational.
