Time to Connect – free online dance and movement programme

Organisation
Time to Connect is a fun, free online dance and movement programme for families and households that meets the NHS’s 5 Steps to Mental Wellbeing.

Adapted from the Artistic Director’s ongoing PhD research and with guidance from Reside Dance CIC’s two Dance Movement Psychotherapists, the 4-week programme aims to strengthen relationships between families, raise self-esteem, boost confidence through learning new skills, give creatively to others and offer the opportunity to practice mindfulness. This programme has been developed in partnership with Reading Place of Culture and will be shared via Reading Culture Live, www.readingculturelive.co.uk.

Across June, they are offering 3 different practices, 5Rhythms, Dance Improvisation and Release-based Movement, resulting in a total of 9 workshops with follow-on activities each week and beyond the programme. Fun, weekly filming tasks will not only see families and households creations shared online but they will also be edited together for a film at the end of the programme that celebrates their achievements.

Programmes require no previous dance experience (although, experience is welcome) and are suitable for all ages and abilities. Participants can sign up to one, two or all three workshop programmes for free. We advise that participants sign up for the whole 4 weeks to really reap the benefits. Here follows some more information about the 3 programmes that we are offering.

  • Release-based Movement with Sarah, Fridays, 11 – 11:40 am, starting Friday 12 June. A release-based movement programme drawing upon yoga, contemporary dance, and mindfulness with a focus on breath and flow.
  • 5Rhythms with Irem, Sundays, 2 – 2:40 pm, starting Sunday 14 June. A guided 5Rhythms programme based upon 5 different ways of moving the body; Flowing, Staccato, Chaos, Lyrical and Stillness. Each of these 5 rhythms, when followed in the same order, can promote a sense of ease, expression, letting go, joy, and wellbeing.
  • Dance Improvisation with Sam, Mondays, 4 – 4:40 pm, starting on 15 June. A dance improvisation programme using mindfulness in response to the 5 senses and borrowing from meditation poetry.

You can find a video of each Dance Artist explaining their programme here. If you are new to Reside Dance C.I.C., Reading’s professional contemporary dance company, you can find out more information about us here.
