Tilehurst Poor’s Land Charity offers financial grants to those in need, hardship or distress who live in the ancient Parish of Tilehurst, in other words living in Tilehurst, Holybrook, Theale or West Reading.
What does it fund?
Each year it provides around £12,000 to help about 90 applicants. There is no typical applicant, but many live on benefits, and may have just been housed by the council in empty accommodation, with no furniture, carpets or electrical goods. Many applications are from single-parent families who have no support from the other parent and find themselves with an urgent need to replace a cooker or a washing machine, or to buy uniform when a child goes to a new school. Others include small grants toward the cost of further education or retraining.
How do I make an application?
- You can download an application form and further information from the charity’s website www.tilehurstplc.org.uk – select Grant Application on the menu bar.
- The form should be printed out, completed, signed and dated, and then posted to the contact address given on the form.
- Wherever possible, applications should include a supporting letter (this can be from an individual such as a social worker, housing support or resettlement officer, occupational therapist, health visitor, district nurse, GP or probation officer, or from a charity such as Citizens’ Advice, Launchpad etc), describing the applicant’s personal circumstances – this may help the application.
- Copies of quotations/bills will be needed before the trustees make a decision.
