Thanks for completing the survey, here’s what we’re doing next…

Thanks to everyone who completed our recent survey for trustees and managers of Reading’s charities and community groups. It was really helpful to hear from you and to get a good understanding of what support is needed in the town so that we can help to provide that through the Advice Service.

What we learnt

The main challenges currently faced by charities and community groups in the town are:

  • keeping services going and adapting services
  • fundraising
  • financial planning in a crisis
  • employment and furlough
  • making difficult decisions
  • managing staff and volunteers remotely

We also learnt that most people would like to continue receiving the RVA News digest with updates on local and national guidance for charities. There was also a significant demand for follow on training and links, as well as for peer support to connect with others in a similar situation.

Thanks for all the individual comments too, we’ll be incorporating these into our programme of support below.

What are we doing next?

Here’s how the Advice Service will be operating over the coming months to help Reading’s charities and community groups:

Online training via Zoom

We’re pleased to announce we’re moving our training online via Zoom. We will do our best to maintain the interactive element used in our in-person sessions. The training topics will be on key areas identified from the survey, such as governance and planning, finance, fundraising and more. The first session will take place on 11 June and you can find the details and book here.

Keeping you up to date
We will continue to provide online updates and links to further resources through our News page and the Coronavirus Community Action page. If you’re not already signed up to RVA News, you can subscribe here.
One-to-one sessions
The Advice Service continues to be available for one-to-one support via email, phone or Zoom, for legal and governance questions about running your charity or community group. Email us at
Safe and Sound
Due to the demand for advice relating to the immediate and mid-term impact of coronavirus on charities, Safe and Sound will recommence on a gradual basis. We can certainly help your charity to keep working towards good governance and the recognition of a Quality Award. For further information contact us at
Thanks again!
Once again we would like to say a big thank you to everyone who is involved in running Reading’s charities and voluntary groups. These may be challenging times but there is also a lot of skill, dedication and inspiration in our sector. We hope you enjoy a good bank holiday weekend and look forward to seeing you on Zoom!
