Funding and Fundraising

Do you know someone in need of financial support? Or do you need a helping hand yourself? If so, the John Sykes Foundation wants to hear from you.

The John Sykes Foundation has been distributing grants to help people and families in need since 2014. Their aim is to support individuals from all walks of life who live within a five mile radius of Reading town centre, in areas such as education, health, arts, culture, heritage, sports, science, financial hardship, and/or disability.

Their mission is to be there when no other avenues of support are available. They understand that sometimes people need a friend to lean on, especially in the cold winter months when things can seem a little more bleak. This is why they are searching for local residents whose lives could benefit from a little extra help. This could be via a one-off grant, or various smaller grants divided between several individuals.

John Sykes, the Charity’s founder said:

This year we would like to see an increase in grant applications, and I am hopeful that our Foundation can really engage with the Reading community and find individuals in need of our support. We know that giving a grant of any value, when needed the most, can remove immediate financial barriers, thereby helping families to work through the bigger issues they’re facing. Because we do not specialise in any particular area our only limitation is that the individual who needs support lives in Reading and the support cannot be obtained through any other avenue.

Some examples of where the charity has awarded grants to include:

  • financially supporting an aspiring athlete to reach his ultimate goal, to compete in the Olympics;
  • providing a specialised travel cot for a young boy with additional needs to enable the family to take holidays and have vital respite care when needed;
  • helping a young girl diagnosed with cancer to stay on top of her school work and explore other hobbies whilst in hospital by donating an iPad; and
  • supporting 5 young people from under-privileged backgrounds gain confidence.
