Primary interest
Normally, Christian Community Action (CCA) provide a full range of emergency furniture to people who have been moved into premises with very little or no furniture at all.

Sometimes a property will have no white goods, no floor coverings, no furniture and nothing to prepare or cook food with. CCA is able to provide good quality, discounted second-hand furniture such as beds, wardrobes, tables and chairs, and also supply bedding and kitchen packs and food parcels. Our aim is to provide the immediate essentials so the household is able to start making a home before other agencies can come alongside to help with support going forward.

How we have adapted our services

During the Covid-19 shutdown we have had to reduce the amount of furniture we are able to provide. We are now running a Mobile Response Team which operates primarily from our van. We are still delivering bed bases and mattresses, bedding and kitchen packs, and emergency food parcels.

This service is managed from the homes of our support centre team and our warehouse foreman and is all coordinated by our warehouse manager. We adhere to social distancing guidelines and use protective measures and will only enter a house to assemble a bed if our clients are unable to do this themselves. We have also been able to arrange a few deliveries of small appliances. Fortunately, with the restrictions on travel, most households are not being relocated at this time, so the demand on our services for furniture is reduced and what we can provide is proving to be sufficient. However, we are supplying many more food parcels and kitchen and bedding packs.

Most of those we are helping are being referred to us by other agencies in Reading including Brighter Futures for Children, various council departments and Launchpad Reading. We are delighted to be able to support their work at this time.

We are very grateful that individuals and groups within Reading, especially the churches, are supporting us with very generous donations of bedding and kitchen items, and extraordinary food supplies. Thank you to every one for your invaluable support.
