In 2007, when Sandy Jeffery was asked to set up a branch of Ryder-Cheshire Volunteers (now Enrych) in Reading, she met Alan’s wife Ruth at a charity event. Ruth mentioned that Alan had a spinal tumour and was confined to a wheelchair for life. Ruth said he needed something active to help him. Sandy immediately visited him and he readily agreed to become a trustee and to chair this new branch of Enrych.
Not only did he help to build up the Enrych project, but it was also the making of him, as he started to become an active member of several sensory disability groups in Reading and West Berkshire.
He was an enthusiastic supporter and campaigner for people with physical disabilities. With his vociferous support for disabled people he was asked to advise organisations such as Network Rail on the design of local new stations and Reading Buses on changes to accommodate wheelchair users. As with many people with this confinement, he became quite ill and spent many hours in hospital before he sadly died in April 2020. He will be sorely missed.
