Become a DraughtBuster!

DIY / Maintenance volunteers needed for Transition Town Reading

The Reading DraughtBusters aims to reduce energy use, to make homes warmer and to alleviate energy poverty. We do this by visiting the homes of those in Energy Poverty.

Our lead DraughtBuster has been doing this for ten years now and wishes to step back

On visiting a household we survey the property for draughts and inadequacies. Then report to the householder giving our recommendations and if acceptable carry out the draughtproofing works there and then, a one-stop-shop arrangement. Before leaving them we offer energy use reduction advice including heating system control and management.

Your help will be greatly appreciated by the clients and this organisation. There is a lot of useful information on our website https://readinguk.org/draughtbusters/
As a volunteer, you will be helping folk in our community to be warmer, and in extreme cases making it less likely that they would become ill or even die! Certainly, they will be warmer after our intervention.

We have been operating on Friday afternoons and occasionally Saturday mornings, The commitment should be for half a day a week during the heating season only. It should be possible to expand the operations,

We will provide full training and support, there is a budget in place to fund materials and travel costs. You will be asked to attend a course on safeguarding.

A detailed role description is available on request.
