The first UK government-funded scheme linking sponsors with Ukrainian refugees has been launched. Phase One of the scheme opened for applications on 18 March 2022. The guidance is currently limited, but the main points of the Homes for Ukraine scheme are:

  • ‘sponsors’ may offer a room in their own house or a separate house;
  • the accommodation must be rent free to the occupiers, but the government will pay the sponsor £350 per month.
  • the accommodation being offered needs to be for a minimum term of six months
Who can be a sponsor?

Individuals (of any nationality and any immigration status providing they have at least six months leave to remain in the UK) and organisations, such as charities, community groups, faith groups, businesses, can register their interest to offer suitable accommodation.

Who is eligible?

To be eligible, an applicant must be a Ukrainian citizen or the immediate family member of a Ukrainian citizen, and resident in Ukraine immediately before 1 January 2022. Applicants will have security checks undertaken as part of the application process.
