Work with patients to promote and support rehabilitative/therapeutic activities

Leading group activities volunteers needed for Berkshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust in RG30

The Oakwood Unit – elderly care rehabilitation inpatient unit –  at Prospect Park Hospital, Reading would like to recruit some volunteers to work with patients to promote and support rehabilitative/therapeutic activities. The importance of movement, mobility and social interaction cannot be underestimated, particularly against a backdrop of recovering from a stroke or orthopaedic surgery.

You will help, under the direction of the clinical team, by encouraging and promoting patients to participate in various activities which volunteers will then lead on the ward.

Most obviously, this role would benefit from persons with a patient, empathetic nature and a considerate, caring attitude with an ability to build rapport and motivate patients who may feel disinclined to join in. And again, common to all volunteers, an unselfish desire to help people.

  • Responsible attitude, able to assist in risk assessment of activities dependent upon ward environment
  • Develop good working relationships with ward staff

This role includes:

  • Supporting wellbeing therapies by working with the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) to identify appropriate therapeutic activities to meet the needs of the patients
  • Attend the multi-disciplinary team meetings (when possible/establish a regular system for debriefing) to provide feedback on patients and participating in decision making
  • Engaging with patients individually to involve them in the choice of activities
  • Liaising with MDT/unit manager to agree provision of equipment needed
  • Preparing/setting up therapy room in readiness for the activity
  • Facilitating ward based activity sessions for the patients -1:1/group facilitation
  • Evaluate with patients the effectiveness of the activity, recording this in patient notes
  • Feeding back to ward staff after sessions
  • Reporting promptly to clinical staff any concerns about patient(s)

What we can offer:

  • Local induction from a friendly team
  • Awareness of physiotherapy/occupational therapies in practice
