Sleuths wanted! – Help us find and tell the stories of queer lives affected by the Labouchere Amendment

Research volunteers needed for Support U in RG1

Sleuths Wanted

Support U have recently been awarded funding from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to find queer lives affected by the Labouchere Amendment in and around Reading. We are looking for volunteer researchers to help us find these people and trace biographies of them in parish and other records. The role will be centred at The Berkshire Record Office on Thursday evenings and we will also be travelling to visit other archives and information sources (all travel will be paid).

We need your help! We are looking to find queer people prosecuted in and around Reading between 1885 and 1967 to discover their stories.

Come Join us

  • Learn to research archival and biographical records.
  • Bring to life stories of these ordinary inmates of Reading Gaol beyond Oscar Wilde
  • Write a history that has never before been explored in the Thames Valley
  • No experience needed, just a good eye for detail

Training will be held on Thursday evenings between 6 and 8:30 pm please get in touch to book your space. There will also be opportunities to visit other archives and sites as we research biographies.

If you would like to volunteer, please contact Amy and Jess at history@supportu.org.uk or 0118 321 9111.
