Help parents/ carers negotiate extra help for their child in school

Support volunteers needed for Reading Information, Advice and Support Service for SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities)

Reading IASS for SEND is looking for strong communicators with an interest in education to support parents/carers with issues around their children’s special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).

Having a child with additional needs can be a stressful experience, and parent/carers often benefit from support when it comes to explaining their child’s needs or negotiating extra help for their child in school.

The role will involve helping parents/carers to fill in forms, and supporting parents/carers at school and local authority meetings. Parent/carers often report that simply having another person with them resulted in a more effective meeting with better outcomes for their child.

Maybe you have a background in education, or are yourself a parent/carer of a child or young person with SEND? If you enjoy meeting all kinds of people and you are a strong communicator, then this is a great opportunity for you to support others and develop your skills. Prospective volunteers will be offered training in effective communication and on SEND issues.

Use of a car is desirable as meetings take place in schools around Reading.
