Dementia-Friendly Communities: Respect, Engage and Support
Dementia is an umbrella term used to describe a set of symptoms that may include memory loss, diminished communication and difficulties with thinking and problem-solving; and in line with research continuing to suggest that dementia is set to become the UK’s leading cause of death, a significant number of initiatives have been proposed to better signpost and support those affected by the disease.
Increasing awareness is the starting point, and by doing so, has cultivated several hundred dementia-friendly communities up-and-down the country. With a simple aim of supporting inclusion and participation, a dementia-friendly community upholds a commitment to ensuring that an individual living with a dementia remains engaged and valued, all while simultaneously providing services, such as advice and training, to develop a better understanding of what dementia is – and how to support a person to live well with their diagnosis.
One such provider that is pioneering a dementia-friendly approach in each of its care home locations is private care provider B&M Care who shares its sharing good practice and specialist knowledge with the wider community as part of a year-on-year calendar of events, including Second Wind Dreams® Virtual Dementia Tour®. Using a selection of patented sensory tools and instructions based on research carried out by Second Wind Dreams® P.K. Beville, M.S., the Tour enables visitors from the local community to experience the physical and mental challenges those living with a dementia face.
As mentioned, increasing awareness is the starting point, but there isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach to delivering support that will benefit everyone. Similar to dementia care practice, signposting should be unique to the individual – and being able to talk face-to-face with a person brings surprising results.
The Virtual Dementia Tour® wll be at B&M Care’s Lakeside Care Home in Reading on Saturday 11 May (9:30am; 12:15pm; and 3pm). Call 01189 268369 to book a complimentary place.
