At Reading Mencap we are saying a heartfelt thank you during Volunteers’ Week, 1-7 June, to our amazing volunteers, without whom we couldn’t run our clubs, activities and services.
We have 30 volunteers – of all ages – supporting us on a regular basis in a variety of roles including helping to run our ME Day Activity Service, our Gateway Club and our Saturday clubs for children and young people. They back up the club leaders by helping people who use our services to develop their independence and confidence by encouraging new skills and helping them get the most out of activities.
A host of volunteers also support us in our fundraising efforts – we are extremely grateful to friends and family who helped out at our Harris Garden Open Afternoon on 14 May, which raised an amazing £2,080.
People with a learning disability who use our services also give their time to support Reading Mencap by making crafts to sell and helping to run stalls and ensure events such as Harris Garden run smoothly.
Dozens of volunteers provide invaluable support at the increasingly popular Are You Listening? Festival. Their help in covering the door, checking wristbands and encouraging people to make donations to Reading Mencap has helped raise more than £40,000 over our five-year history. Individuals also play a key part in volunteering their time by taking part in fundraising events such as Reading Half Marathon and the Green Park Challenge.
Chief Executive Mandi Smith said everyone at Reading Mencap was extremely grateful for the incredible contribution made by volunteers. She said: “Without volunteers we would not be able to run our services. We are truly thankful to everyone who gives up their time for the benefit of others. It is much appreciated by staff, trustees and the people who use our services and their families.”
Anyone volunteering at Reading Mencap is given training and ongoing support. Recognition of their contribution is also made through the presentation of awards at our AGM, which will be held this year on Thursday 13 July.
Reading Mencap is looking for volunteers to help its members shape their moves at its monthly disco and to help with its eBay fundraising operation. Please visit www.readingmencap.org.uk for details.
