With the cold weather just around the corner, Citizens Advice Reading’s Energy Team are about to start going out and talking to groups about how to save money on gas and electricity bills. Their work is two-fold.
One-to-one appointments for clients
Firstly they run face-to-face appointments for clients to help them understand how to cut the cost of their gas and electricity. Clients bring their latest bills with them, and they discuss the best options for reducing cost and/or consumption. This could also be something the Energy Team arrange in your offices on a drop-in or appointment basis, if you think it could be appropriate.
Group sessions for front line workers and community groups
The team also offer group sessions to both consumers and front line workers. These are designed to be training events, so people leave with all the information and skills they need to reduce cost themselves. Consumer sessions are usually about 60 to 90 minutes. Front line worker sessions can be run differently, so the team can do brief 10 to 15 minute sessions at the end or beginning of team meetings, or full hour long training sessions to give your team the best information. They would also make sure your team are aware of how best to refer any clients into Citizens Advice Reading or to another relevant organisation.
Topics covered in both instances include:
- cheaper gas and electricity deals with suppliers through switching
- improving the energy efficiency of the home through no-cost and low-cost measures
- claiming support and grants, for example, new boilers and insulation or the Warm Home Discount
- managing debt and bill queries
- the good and bad of different types of meter and tariff
- anything else Citizens Advice Reading can help with.
The Energy Team bring packs of information for the attendees, and some practical bits and pieces, such as thermometer cards, and they would come to you for any training session. This is all provided free of charge, and they run the full training sessions through the winter period from October to March.
