Reading Town Meal is a vibrant, community-driven event unique to Reading, which has become an annual occasion at Forbury Gardens. They have just launched their Crowdfunder campaign with the target of raising around £2,000 for this year’s Town Meal and to secure the future of the community event.
Reading Town Meal celebrates and promotes home-grown and healthy, sustainable local food. It provides a space where Reading’s ‘sustainability’ groups come together, showcasing their work to audiences they otherwise cannot reach.
Hundreds of home growers and allotment holders from across Reading donate their fresh produce, which is then turned into a delicious, healthy three course meal by Reading College catering students. The vegetarian meal aims to serve around 1,000 people for free in Forbury Gardens, and is open to the whole community. This is accompanied by practical workshops around sustainable, healthy food and lifestyles, community group and local food producer stalls, music from upcoming local musicians and a variety of family fun activities. All of which is made possible by dozens of dedicated volunteers that complete the day.
Since 2011, there have been five fantastic Reading Town Meals. Even with the amazing volunteer input, the Town Meal still costs around £5,000 to stage. This year they have managed to secure some grant funding, but there is still £2,000 left to raise before the event.
We need your help and donations – big or small, to make sure this much-loved event continues to help create a Reading that has more opportunities to eat healthy, local, sustainable food. Donate now and choose a ‘tasty reward’ including Town Meal goody bags, pocket salad gardens, and VIP tours of Reading’s RISC roof garden. Let’s make this years Town Meal the best ever ‘picnic in the park’ and secure the future of this event!
