Reading Adopt Your Street (RAYS) has been running since June 2016, after a successful application to Tesco Bags of Help. The idea of the scheme is to enable communities to take more ownership of their local area. Reading Borough Council are keen to increase participation in the scheme and build on recent successes.
Alfred Sutton Primary School signed up recently when a couple of their students wanted to make a difference in their area. Their mum said:
My daughters have become increasingly aware and concerned about the climate and our environment. They were stuck by Greta Thunberg’s statement that ‘the only thing we need more than hope is action’ so they initiated a Litter Club around their school. With fantastic support and encouragement from their head teacher and with advice and equipment from Reading Borough Council as part of the Reading Adopt Your Street scheme, this Litter Club has become more formalised. Once a month, on a Saturday morning, volunteers are invited to collect litter around Alfred Sutton School in designated zones. Our first litter picking day was highly successful and people are keen to contribute where they can.
