How you and your organisation can help Reading become Dementia Friendly

Reading Dementia Action Alliance (DAA) is a partnerhip of local organisations which aims to promote and sustain the town as a dementia friendly community. The Alliance aims to

  • Raise awareness of dementia across local communities.
  • Develop dementia friendly communities for people with dementia so that their interaction with local businesses, shops and care providers is as pleasant and stress-free as possible.
  • Seek membership from businesses, services, the care sector and organisations both in the town centre and the wider community.
  • Ensure that the voices of people with dementia, their carers and families are heard

There are several ways in which local organisations can help the work of The DAA

Request a dementia friends session for your staff and volunteers

A Dementia Friends session takes just one hour and gives an insight into dementia and how to support those around you with dementia. The session also provides practical suggestions of how you as individuals and your organisation as a whole can be more dementia friendly. Find scheduled sessions at www.dementiafriends.org.uk or contact michelle.berry@reading.gov.uk to arrange a session for your organisation.

Become a Dementia Friendly organisation

Whilst running a Dementia Friends session for your staff, volunteers and/or members may be the first step, there are other things you can do to ensure your organisation is dementia friendly. There are checklists for a range of different businesses organisations, which can be requested from michelle.berry@reading.gov.uk  so that you can work towards making your building and organisation dementia friendly.

Join the DAA

The Dementia Action Alliance exists to develop Reading as a Dementia Friendly town and will be most effective with the widest representation and involvement from businesses and organisations across Reading. As well as the Reading-wide group. Neighbourhood-based DAA groups have also been established, so if this is more relevant to you, get in touch with Michelle.berry@reading.gov.uk to get involved.

Become a Dementia Champion

As a dementia champion, you would commit to training up others as dementia friends by delivering the short 1 hour training session. Free one-day training sessions are running at venues around Berkshire and you are then tasked with helping 100 other people become dementia friends.
